State of the City Presentation, February 2010
The historic John H. Bankhead National Highway was one of the earliest American auto trails that connected Washington, D.C. to San Diego, California on the Pacific. This highway connects through more than 14 states stretching across 3,000 miles coast to coast. Last year, Garland City Council members John Willis and Laura Perkins Cox worked with State Representative Carol Kent to officially name the Bankhead Highway a historical road.
On June 9, 2009, House Bill 2644 was passed by the House and Senate and signed into law on June 19, 2009 by Governor Rick Perry. In honor of this historic highway, the City of Garland collaborated with the Texas Historical Commission to hold a dedication ceremony on May 22. The marker is placed in Downtown Garland on the square. This was an extraordinary effort by many people to make this day happen and I was honored to be a part of it.
In addition, the Quarter I winner of the Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award was announced at our May 18 City Council meeting. James Ferrer was the winner for this quarter for his dedication and commitment to improving not only his personal property, but also his neighbors’ property and the neighborhood. Mr. Ferrer is a former member of Garland’s Citizens Environmental and Neighborhood Advisory Committee (CENAC) and takes great pride and compassion in his community and in the work he does. He was commended for the job well done and given the first Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award of 2010. Thank you, James, for your continued commitment and support for the Garland community. Congratulations on a well-deserved award!

Mayor's Good Neighbor Award
Each quarter Garland Mayor Ronald Jones will accept nominations for the Mayor's Good Neighbor Award. Completed Good Neighbor Award Nomination Packets should be returned to the Mayor's Office on the 4th Floor of City Hall. Mail to Mayor Ronald E. Jones, City of Garland, P.O.
